Rashard Mendenhall's Twitter Sparks Controversy Yet Again

Steelers fans just can't get a break, can they?  Last season they had to deal with all the Big Ben drama and now Rashard Mendenhall sets a new record for stupidity with his latest tweets about Osama bin Laden.

In case you've been living under a rock, Mendenhall tweeted the following after hearing the reaction to bin Laden's death on Sunday:

“What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…”
Holy hell.  What is the matter with this guy?  We've only heard one side?  No, no we haven't.  How many times did we hear audio tapes or video recorded statements from Osama?   That's like saying we never saw or heard Joseph Stalin speak.  It's monumentally stupid.

But wait, it gets better:

"“I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”
So not only is he saying Osama bin Laden might not be a bad guy but he also might not be responsible for September 11th.

Hey jackass, if Osama wasn't responsible for 9-11 WHY DID HE TAKE CREDIT FOR IT THEN?  Was he in cahoots with the government all along?

Only in this country could two airplanes fly into skyscrapers on live television in front of billions of people and someone would have the balls to say "well, if you believe that, I don't know what to tell you."  It's so stupid it's almost mind blowing.

What is Mendenhall going to do when the Steelers open the season on September 11th against the Ravens?  Since it's the 10th anniversary on 9-11, you know it's going to be a special moment.  Is Mendenhall not going to take part in the ceremonies because he doesn't believe bin Laden's full story has been heard?

This is actually not the first time that Mendenhall's Twitter has gotten him into trouble.  If you remember, he backed up Adrian Peterson's notion earlier this year that the NFL was equivalent to slavery.  People chalked that one up to a misunderstanding and gave him the benefit of the doubt.  No more.

People are going to say that Mendenhall had every right to say this because of freedom of speech and I agree 100%.  However, part of freedom of speech is taking responsibility and defending what you say.  Mendenhall is hiding behind a Twitter account while making statements that basically support the biggest terrorist the world has ever seen.

If I'm Mendenhall's agent, I get him to apologize immediately.  He has already deleted some of the offending tweets but that's not good enough.

It's said that people only care about what athletes do on the field but I can tell you this is one case where that is 100% wrong.  Anyone who lost a loved one on 9-11 has to live with that pain for the rest of their lives while Mendenhall collects his millions and tweets about bin Laden being misunderstood.

The Steelers have already distanced themselves from these moronic statements but really I doubt anyone would have said anything about the organization itself.  This is all on Rashard Mendenhall's shoulders.  People were mad when he fumbled in the Super Bowl but this is something much more serious and on a bigger level.

Sure, he's a top 10 running back but, if the Steelers dumped his ass tomorrow, I don't know anyone who would be sad to see him go.
