Matt Cooke Suspended for the Rest of the Season and Playoffs

So the NHL ax came down and it wasn't pretty.  Matt Cooke has been suspended for the remainder of the regular season and for the 1st round of the playoffs for his hit on Rangers player Ryan McDonagh.

I definitely expected a suspension to come here but this is much more than I imagined.  10 games I felt would have been sufficient but losing Cooke for the first round really hurts the Penguins.

Did Bettman do this because he feels Mario Lemieux showed him up with the letter he sent last week?  Is he making an example of Matt Cooke because of his refusal to follow the rules?

In my opinion, what Matt Cooke did was nowhere near as bad as what Trevor Gillies did to Eric Tangradi back in Long Island.  Gillies got 10 games for elbowing Tangradi in the head and then punching him in the face as he crumpled to the ground.

Cooke, on the other hand, delivered an elbow and got essentially 17 games.  Where's the consistency?
